Fear of going insane (agateophobia)

A fear of going mad can creep in during panic, after a stressful time, or when a strange thought pops into your head and will not leave. It feels frightening, but I see it often in people with anxiety, and it can be helped.

What it feels like

  • Worrying a strange thought means something is wrong
  • Checking yourself for signs of losing control
  • Feeling frightened when panic or anxiety rises

Please note: If you are worried about your mental health, or your thoughts feel out of your control, please speak to your GP as well so you have proper medical support.

Common questions

Does having this fear mean I am going mad?

No. Worrying about losing your mind is usually a sign of anxiety, not of madness. The fear itself is very distressing, but it is a different thing from losing touch with reality.

How can you help?

I use hypnotherapy and NLP to change how your mind responds to the thing you fear, so the old alarm stops going off. Sessions are one to one over Zoom, and you get a recording of the hypnosis to listen to afterwards.

How many sessions will I need?

Many clients notice a real difference after one 90 minute session. If the fear goes back a long way, three sessions gives us room to make the change stick.
