Fear of kidney disease (albuminurophobia)
Albuminurophobia is a fear of kidney disease. Someone with this fear may check their urine often, worry about back aches, or search symptoms online for reassurance that rarely lasts. Any real symptoms or concerns about kidney health are best checked with a GP, who can arrange simple tests.
About this phobia
The name is built on albuminuria, the medical term for a protein called albumin appearing in urine, which can be a sign of kidney problems. The phobia term itself is found mainly on lists of unusual phobias rather than in clinical use. It is closely related to health anxiety and to nosophobia, the fear of having a disease.
What it feels like
- Checking the colour of urine or how often you go
- Reading up on kidney symptoms again and again
- Seeking reassurance that does not seem to last

Common questions
Is fear of kidney disease a form of health anxiety?
Often, yes. A fear focused on one illness frequently sits within wider health anxiety, where normal body sensations feel like warning signs. Checking any genuine symptoms with a GP is the right first step, and support for the anxiety itself can help too.
How can you help?
I use hypnotherapy and NLP to change how your mind responds to the thing you fear, so the old alarm stops going off. Sessions are one to one over Zoom, and you get a recording of the hypnosis to listen to afterwards.
How many sessions will I need?
Many clients notice a real difference after one 90 minute session. If the fear goes back a long way, three sessions gives us room to make the change stick.
