Fear of undressing in front of others (dishabiliophobia)

Dishabiliophobia is a fear of undressing in front of someone. It can make changing rooms, gym showers, medical examinations and intimate moments feel very stressful, and some people go to great lengths to avoid being seen without clothes.

About this phobia

The name is based on the French word for being in a state of undress. It is a rare term found mostly on lists. It overlaps with body image worries, shyness and gymnophobia, a fear of nudity.

What it feels like

  • Changing in toilet cubicles or under a towel to avoid being seen
  • Dread before a medical exam, swimming lesson or clothes fitting
  • Strong embarrassment or panic if walked in on while changing

Common questions

Why do I feel panicky undressing in front of others?

For many people it is linked to body image, shyness or a strong sense of privacy. For some, it may relate to past experiences where they did not feel safe. If that is the case, a GP or a specialist counsellor can help, gently and at your own pace.

How can you help?

I use hypnotherapy and NLP to change how your mind responds to the thing you fear, so the old alarm stops going off. Sessions are one to one over Zoom, and you get a recording of the hypnosis to listen to afterwards.

How many sessions will I need?

Many clients notice a real difference after one 90 minute session. If the fear goes back a long way, three sessions gives us room to make the change stick.
