Fear of electricity (electrophobia)

Electrophobia is a fear of electricity. Plugging in appliances, changing a light bulb or being near pylons and cables can feel risky, and some people avoid DIY or electrical tasks altogether.

About this phobia

The word draws on electricity, which itself comes from the Greek elektron, meaning amber. It is a rare term found mostly on lists. It often follows an electric shock or a frightening story, and it can overlap with fears of fire or of storms.

What it feels like

  • Hesitating before touching switches, plugs or sockets
  • Unplugging everything at night or before leaving the house
  • Alarm at buzzing, sparks or flickering lights

Common questions

Is a fear of electricity sensible?

Some caution around electricity is healthy and keeps people safe. A phobia goes beyond that, causing fear around ordinary, safe tasks like plugging in a kettle. If you have real concerns about wiring, a qualified electrician can check it.

How can you help?

I use hypnotherapy and NLP to change how your mind responds to the thing you fear, so the old alarm stops going off. Sessions are one to one over Zoom, and you get a recording of the hypnosis to listen to afterwards.

How many sessions will I need?

Many clients notice a real difference after one 90 minute session. If the fear goes back a long way, three sessions gives us room to make the change stick.
