Fear of bridges (gephyrophobia)

A fear of bridges can show up on motorways, footbridges, railway crossings and even short flyovers. It can change the routes you take and the places you are willing to go. It is something I help people with.

What it feels like

  • Planning routes to avoid bridges
  • Gripping the wheel or freezing on a crossing
  • Feeling dizzy or panicky looking down or across

Common questions

Is this the same as a fear of heights?

They can overlap, but they are not the same. Some people are fine with heights but panic on a bridge, often because of the driving, the water below or the feeling of being unable to stop. Knowing which it is helps us work on the right thing.

How can you help?

I use hypnotherapy and NLP to change how your mind responds to the thing you fear, so the old alarm stops going off. Sessions are one to one over Zoom, and you get a recording of the hypnosis to listen to afterwards.

How many sessions will I need?

Many clients notice a real difference after one 90 minute session. If the fear goes back a long way, three sessions gives us room to make the change stick.
