Fear of crowded rooms (koinoniphobia)
Koinoniphobia is a fear of rooms full of people. It can make parties, packed waiting rooms, staff meetings or busy pubs feel overwhelming, and some people hover near the door or slip away early to cope.
About this phobia
This term mostly appears on online lists of phobias and is not a formal diagnosis. It overlaps with enochlophobia, the fear of crowds, and with social anxiety, both of which are far better documented.
What it feels like
- Heading for a spot near the exit as soon as a room fills up
- Feeling hot, flushed or short of breath in a busy space
- Arriving late or leaving early to miss the busiest part of an event

Common questions
How is koinoniphobia different from social anxiety?
Social anxiety is mostly about fear of being judged or embarrassed by others. Koinoniphobia is described more as discomfort with a room being full, whoever is in it. In real life the two often mix, so it helps to notice which part feels worst.
How can you help?
I use hypnotherapy and NLP to change how your mind responds to the thing you fear, so the old alarm stops going off. Sessions are one to one over Zoom, and you get a recording of the hypnosis to listen to afterwards.
How many sessions will I need?
Many clients notice a real difference after one 90 minute session. If the fear goes back a long way, three sessions gives us room to make the change stick.
