Fear of decaying matter (seplophobia)
Seplophobia is a fear of decaying matter, such as rotting food, compost or dead plants. Someone with this fear might throw food away well before it goes off, avoid emptying bins, or feel panic at a bad smell in the kitchen. It often comes with strong disgust as well as fear.
About this phobia
The term is rarely reported and appears mostly on lists of phobias rather than in clinical writing. It sits close to fears of germs and contamination, such as mysophobia, and to a strong disgust response. In some people it can also be tied up with worries about illness or death.
What it feels like
- Strong disgust or nausea at the sight or smell of rotting food
- Throwing things away early to avoid any chance of decay
- Avoiding bins, compost heaps or fridges that need clearing out

Common questions
Is a fear of rotting things just strong disgust?
Disgust is a big part of it, but it becomes a phobia when it leads to real distress or avoidance in daily life. Some people find it links to contamination worries, which can feel similar to OCD. If cleaning or avoiding decay takes up hours of the day, a GP is a good first contact.
How can you help?
I use hypnotherapy and NLP to change how your mind responds to the thing you fear, so the old alarm stops going off. Sessions are one to one over Zoom, and you get a recording of the hypnosis to listen to afterwards.
How many sessions will I need?
Many clients notice a real difference after one 90 minute session. If the fear goes back a long way, three sessions gives us room to make the change stick.
