Fear of the dentist (dentophobia)
Many people put off check-ups for years because of a fear of the dentist, often until a problem forces them to go.
What it feels like
- Dread in the days before an appointment
- Feeling trapped in the chair, unable to say stop
- Cancelling or avoiding appointments altogether
Common questions
Where does it come from?
Usually a painful or frightening experience as a child. Lying back with someone working in your mouth, and not feeling in control, keeps it going.
How do sessions work?
I use hypnotherapy and NLP to change how your mind responds to the dentist. Sessions are one to one over Zoom, and you get a recording of the hypnosis to listen to afterwards.
How many sessions will I need?
Many clients notice a real difference after one 90 minute session. If the fear goes back a long way, three sessions gives us room to make the change stick.
Should I tell my dentist?
Yes. Most dentists are used to nervous patients. Agree a signal, like raising a hand, so you know you can pause at any time.
