Fear of falling (basophobia)

A fear of falling can show up on stairs, icy paths, ladders or when you feel unsteady. It often goes hand in hand with a fear of heights and balance worries, and it can be helped.

What it feels like

  • Walking slowly or holding on to rails
  • Avoiding ice, heights or uneven ground
  • Feeling wobbly even when nothing is wrong

Please note: If you have had actual falls, dizziness or balance problems, please see your GP to check for any physical cause.

Common questions

Is this the same as a fear of heights?

They overlap, but they are not the same. With a fear of falling you may be nervous even at ground level, while a fear of heights is about being up high. We would look at which one fits you.

How can you help?

I use hypnotherapy and NLP to change how your mind responds to the thing you fear, so the old alarm stops going off. Sessions are one to one over Zoom, and you get a recording of the hypnosis to listen to afterwards.

How many sessions will I need?

Many clients notice a real difference after one 90 minute session. If the fear goes back a long way, three sessions gives us room to make the change stick.
