Fear of fear (phobophobia)

Phobophobia is the fear of fear itself, or of having a phobia. It often starts after a first panic attack, when you begin to dread feeling that way again, and it can be helped.

What it feels like

  • Worrying about when the next panic might strike
  • Avoiding places where you once felt afraid
  • Watching your body for any sign of anxiety

Please note: If panic symptoms such as chest pain or palpitations are new to you, please see your GP first so we know your heart is healthy.

Common questions

Why am I afraid of being afraid?

After a frightening episode, the mind tries to protect you by watching for it to happen again. That watchfulness can keep the anxiety going. It is a common pattern, and it can be eased.

How can you help?

I use hypnotherapy and NLP to change how your mind responds to the thing you fear, so the old alarm stops going off. Sessions are one to one over Zoom, and you get a recording of the hypnosis to listen to afterwards.

How many sessions will I need?

Many clients notice a real difference after one 90 minute session. If the fear goes back a long way, three sessions gives us room to make the change stick.
