Fear of lifts (elevator phobia)

A fear of lifts can mean taking the stairs every time, even up ten floors. For some people it is about being shut in, for others it is the thought of the lift getting stuck, falling or running out of air. It often overlaps with claustrophobia, and it can be helped.

What it feels like

  • Taking the stairs whenever you can, however many floors
  • Feeling panicky as the doors close
  • Worrying that the lift will get stuck or fall

Common questions

Do lifts ever fall?

It is extremely rare. Modern lifts have several safety systems, including brakes that grip the rails if anything goes wrong with the cables. If a lift stops between floors, it is designed to stay put safely until help arrives.

How can you help?

I use hypnotherapy and NLP to change how your mind responds to the thing you fear, so the old alarm stops going off. Sessions are one to one over Zoom, and you get a recording of the hypnosis to listen to afterwards.

How many sessions will I need?

Many clients notice a real difference after one 90 minute session. If the fear goes back a long way, three sessions gives us room to make the change stick.
