Fear of marriage and commitment (gamophobia)

A fear of marriage and commitment can show up when a partner mentions moving in, getting engaged or planning a wedding. It can leave you feeling trapped, even when you care deeply about the person. It can be helped.

What it feels like

  • Feeling panicky when talk turns to commitment
  • Pulling back when a relationship gets serious
  • Worrying about being trapped or making a mistake

Common questions

Does this mean I do not love my partner?

Not at all. Many people with this fear love their partner very much. The anxiety is usually about the idea of commitment itself, often linked to past experiences or things seen growing up.

How can you help?

I use hypnotherapy and NLP to change how your mind responds to the thing you fear, so the old alarm stops going off. Sessions are one to one over Zoom, and you get a recording of the hypnosis to listen to afterwards.

How many sessions will I need?

Many clients notice a real difference after one 90 minute session. If the fear goes back a long way, three sessions gives us room to make the change stick.
