Fear of people in masks and costumes (masklophobia)

A fear of people in masks, costumes and mascots can show up at parties, fairs, theme parks and Halloween. Not being able to see a face or read the person behind it is the usual reason. It can be helped.

What it feels like

  • Avoiding fancy dress, mascots and Halloween
  • Feeling uneasy when you cannot see a face
  • Wanting to leave when someone wears a mask

Common questions

Is this the same as a fear of clowns?

It is related to coulrophobia, the fear of clowns, but it is wider. It covers anyone whose face or body is hidden, including mascots and people in masks. The common thread is not knowing who or what is underneath.

How can you help?

I use hypnotherapy and NLP to change how your mind responds to the thing you fear, so the old alarm stops going off. Sessions are one to one over Zoom, and you get a recording of the hypnosis to listen to afterwards.

How many sessions will I need?

Many clients notice a real difference after one 90 minute session. If the fear goes back a long way, three sessions gives us room to make the change stick.
