Fear of metal (metallophobia)
Metallophobia is a fear of metal, either of metal objects in general or of touching certain metal surfaces. For some it is about the cold feel or the sound of metal scraping; for others it is a worry about sharp edges or rust. Everyday things like cutlery, door handles and keys can become hard to use.
About this phobia
The word combines the Greek metallon, meaning metal or mine, with phobia. It appears mostly on lists of phobias and has very little clinical writing behind it. It can overlap with sensory sensitivities, such as a strong dislike of certain textures or sounds.
What it feels like
- A shiver or recoil when skin touches cold metal
- Using wooden or plastic alternatives for cutlery and utensils
- Strong discomfort at the sound of metal scraping on metal

Common questions
Can a fear of metal be about texture or sound rather than danger?
Yes. Many people who describe this fear are reacting to the feel, taste or sound of metal rather than any real threat. That kind of sensory dislike can still be strong enough to shape daily habits.
How can you help?
I use hypnotherapy and NLP to change how your mind responds to the thing you fear, so the old alarm stops going off. Sessions are one to one over Zoom, and you get a recording of the hypnosis to listen to afterwards.
How many sessions will I need?
Many clients notice a real difference after one 90 minute session. If the fear goes back a long way, three sessions gives us room to make the change stick.
