Fear of numbers (arithmophobia)
A fear of numbers can show up in sums, bills, phone numbers, tests and even looking at a clock. It is often tied to bad experiences of maths at school, and it can be helped.
What it feels like
- Tensing up when asked to do sums
- Avoiding forms, bills or budgets
- Feeling embarrassed about working with numbers
Common questions
Is this the same as being bad at maths?
No. Plenty of people find maths hard without being afraid of it. With arithmophobia, numbers bring up real anxiety, and that often has little to do with how clever you are.
How can you help?
I use hypnotherapy and NLP to change how your mind responds to the thing you fear, so the old alarm stops going off. Sessions are one to one over Zoom, and you get a recording of the hypnosis to listen to afterwards.
How many sessions will I need?
Many clients notice a real difference after one 90 minute session. If the fear goes back a long way, three sessions gives us room to make the change stick.
