Fear of reptiles and amphibians (herpetophobia)

A fear of reptiles and amphibians can show up at zoos, in pet shops, on holiday or in the garden when a lizard or frog appears. The sudden movement and unusual skin are common triggers. It can be helped.

What it feels like

  • Avoiding zoos, pet shops and reptile houses
  • Freezing when a lizard or frog appears
  • Feeling uneasy about slimy or scaly skin

Common questions

Is this the same as a fear of snakes?

They are related, but snakes have their own fear, called ophidiophobia. Herpetophobia covers a wider group including lizards, frogs, toads and crocodiles. Some people fear just one type and some fear them all.

How can you help?

I use hypnotherapy and NLP to change how your mind responds to the thing you fear, so the old alarm stops going off. Sessions are one to one over Zoom, and you get a recording of the hypnosis to listen to afterwards.

How many sessions will I need?

Many clients notice a real difference after one 90 minute session. If the fear goes back a long way, three sessions gives us room to make the change stick.
