Fear of sharks (galeophobia)

A fear of sharks can show up at the beach, in a swimming pool, in a lake or even while watching a film. Many people feel it without ever having seen a shark, and it can be helped.

What it feels like

  • Avoiding the sea, even in shallow water
  • Feeling uneasy at the sight of a fin shape
  • Struggling to watch shark films or documentaries

Common questions

Why am I afraid of sharks when I have never seen one?

Films, news stories and documentaries can plant a very vivid picture in the mind. Your brain treats that picture as if it were real danger, so the fear can feel strong even with no direct experience. It can overlap with a fear of deep water, which is called thalassophobia.

How can you help?

I use hypnotherapy and NLP to change how your mind responds to the thing you fear, so the old alarm stops going off. Sessions are one to one over Zoom, and you get a recording of the hypnosis to listen to afterwards.

How many sessions will I need?

Many clients notice a real difference after one 90 minute session. If the fear goes back a long way, three sessions gives us room to make the change stick.
