Fear of the colour white (leukophobia)

Leukophobia is a fear of the colour white. Because white is everywhere, from walls and bed sheets to snow and paper, the fear can be hard to avoid, and it may lead someone to fill their home with colour or feel uneasy in clinical, all-white rooms.

About this phobia

The name comes from the Greek leukos, meaning white. It is a rare term found mostly on lists of phobias. Fears of a colour are often linked to something else the colour stands for, such as hospitals, illness or a particular memory.

What it feels like

  • Unease in bright white rooms such as clinics or bathrooms
  • Choosing coloured clothes, bedding and decor wherever possible
  • A strong reaction to snow, white uniforms or blank pages

Common questions

Can you really be scared of a colour?

Yes. Fears of colours are unusual, but people do report them, and they often link to a memory or meaning attached to that colour. Working out what white represents for the person is often the key to easing it.

How can you help?

I use hypnotherapy and NLP to change how your mind responds to the thing you fear, so the old alarm stops going off. Sessions are one to one over Zoom, and you get a recording of the hypnosis to listen to afterwards.

How many sessions will I need?

Many clients notice a real difference after one 90 minute session. If the fear goes back a long way, three sessions gives us room to make the change stick.
