Fear of submerged objects (submechanophobia)

A fear of submerged man-made objects can show up when you see a sunken ship, an underwater statue or a huge structure beneath the surface. It is a fairly new term, often spread through photos and videos online, and the fear can be helped.

What it feels like

  • Feeling sick at pictures of sunken ships
  • Avoiding docks, dams or deep water views
  • Imagining large shapes below the surface

Common questions

Is this the same as a fear of the sea?

They overlap but are not the same. Some people are fine at the beach but uneasy at big shapes under the water. Thalassophobia is the wider fear of deep water, and some people have both.

How can you help?

I use hypnotherapy and NLP to change how your mind responds to the thing you fear, so the old alarm stops going off. Sessions are one to one over Zoom, and you get a recording of the hypnosis to listen to afterwards.

How many sessions will I need?

Many clients notice a real difference after one 90 minute session. If the fear goes back a long way, three sessions gives us room to make the change stick.
